Why Did God Create This World?
The act of creation is a theme that reverberates through many faith traditions. In Christianity, the narrative of creation is central not only to understanding the origin of all things
In “The Six-Day War in Creationism,” Gene Nouhan uses the template that moved a cult to orthodoxy. He answers the questions that have gone unanswered in Creationism and deconstructs weak and absurd arguments in the debate. “This is not just about the age of the earth but a whole theological movement that’s doing a lot of harm. I like Nouhan’s solid orthodoxy about eternal life through union with Christ.” − Professor Phillip Cary, Editor of Pro Ecclesia: A Journal of Catholic and Evangelical Theology
“This book is like a hammer blow knocking down one wrong idea after another.” – Professor of New Testament, Michael Morrison
A virtual encyclopedia on Creationism, this book is divided into five parts, each addressing the different facets of the Young Earth Reform Movement. Gene Nouhan offers a comprehensive analysis of the movement’s claims and presuppositions and gives you a mastery of Genesis that most clergy do not have; plus it provides a wealth of resources.
Gene Nouhan is a distinguished author with a passion for exploring biblical theology. Known for his rigorous analytical skills and profound insights, Nouhan has established himself as a leading voice in the Creationism debate and orthodox biblical interpretation.
Gene Nouhan was influential in moving the Worldwide Church of God to Christian orthodoxy. He wrote peer reviewed studies and gave lectures at conferences. As a Director of Apologetics at Reasonable Faith with William Lane Craig, He taught Classical Apologetics in Cincinnati Oh, home of the Young Earth evangelist Ken Ham. After numerous disturbing debates with extremists in the Young Earth Reform Movement he noticed the same faulty doctrinal development he experienced in the Worldwide Church of God and applies the same process to the radical Young Earth Reform Movement.
In his book “The Six-Day War in Creationism,” Nouhan offers a comprehensive critique of the presuppositions and claims in the Young Earth Movement. His work goes beyond mere criticism by deconstructing all the arguments in the debate and challenges readers on all sides to rethink their approach to the theology intended in Genesis. Nouhan argues for the importance of the Bible’s historical context in the Ancient Near East, urging readers to distinguish between the figurative and theological importance of Genesis apart from modern science or the notion of “Creation Science”.
Gene Nouhan’s The Six-Day War in Creationism is “not just about the age of the earth but a whole theological movement that's doing a lot of harm, making inessentials into essentials, drawing narrow boundaries that exclude and intimidate other Christians…offering in the end, to coin a phrase, Good News for Anxious Christians. I like [Nouhan’s] concluding remarks very much: solid orthodoxy about eternal life through union with Christ by faith."

This book is packed with good information and sound reasoning about the days of creation and why some people build a worldview around the idea that these days must be 24-hour days. As some have said, it is easier to fool people than to convince them they were fooled. It is not easy to escape the intellectual prison-house that false thinking can put us in. I hope that some will find this book when they begin to study the book of Genesis. This book is like a series of hammer blows that knocks down one wrong idea after another. And along the way, there is lots of informative material for everyone else, too, about the nature of God, of the Bible and faith and the mission of the Church. Hundreds of footnotes help document what Nouhan is saying, and it is not difficult reading. I want to thank Gene for giving us a copy of the book for our library

Nouhan does not criticize those who hold a young earth belief based on faith. He does take exception to the Reform Movement within Young Earth Creationism that takes a nonessential and attempts to make it an essential teaching in Christianity. Mr. Nouhan points out in this fine book how some young earthers go so far as to claim that if you do not agree with their young earth notions then you are calling God a liar!

In "The Six-Day War in Creationism", Nouhan turns his attention to where a Christian’s focus should be when it comes to “Creation.” This is the most important contribution in the book. While the Genesis 1 beginning is clearly part of the story, the main Creation event for Christians is John 1 that introduces the New Creation with the divine invitation to union with God in eternity. This is an important work in the debate over Genesis as it addresses and exposes all the theological flaws and key arguments held by Young Earthers.
Elder in the Presbyterian Church
I thoroughly enjoyed The Six-Day War in Creationism by Gene Nouhan. In fact, I read it twice! The author presents clearly and comprehensively the case against the Young Earth Reform Movement and its dogma. The book distinguishes between the YE Reform Movement (the real problem) from a simple belief in a young earth, which Christians are free to accept without prejudice. In a court of law, the case made in this book against the movement would be a slam dunk for the prosecution.
This may be the most important book on the "young earth" controversy that so harms and divides the Church today. Nouhan is the right person "for such a time as this." Having served as a pastor in a denomination whose theology went sideways for a time, and later righted the ship, Nouhan writes from a perspective of a man who’s been there. Being the only significant denomination to return to orthodoxy required an incredible amount of humility and introspection. An honesty that could only come from setting aside sacred cows and favored traditions and allowing the truth to be revealed. It is with this spirit that Nouhan approaches this very important issue plaguing the church today.
Amazon Reviewer
I highly recommend adding this volume to your library as it sheds valuable insight into the Young Earth Reform Movement and highlights the concerning excesses in this movement. This book is a very detailed investigation into this topic. The information within it ought to be understood by more people, especially Christian Pastors, Youth Leaders, Christian school administrators, and others in Christian ministry.
Senior Pastor United Methodist Church
Gene has written a comprehensive, biblically sound book on the flaws of six-day creationism and the damage that extremist views do to the work of the Gospel. I found the book to be firmly rooted in scripture, tradition and reason. It is very well researched and a scholarly work that doesn't demean those who believe in a literal six-day creation story… Gene helps the reader see that there isn't just one way to view the creation of the world. It is a well written, comprehensive book that is worth the time to read.

I’ve wanted a book like this for al long time. It is finally here! I want to thank Gene Nouhan for consistently taking the discussion at nearly every point back to the foundational topic of theology. He does excellent work in showing how core teachings/presuppositions of the Young Earth Reform Movement (led by such notaries as Ken Ham) are frequently at odds with the biblical, orthodox theology of the historic Christian church. To anyone who believes the Bible is unreliable unless God created the cosmos in six literal days, I urge you to read this book. Nouhan presents the key arguments showing their weaknesses, yet Gene is respectful throughout. It is well worth your time.

The author, Gene Nouhan, respects young earthers while pointing out their unreasonable positions. He takes an apologetic approach in pointing out the multiple inconsistencies and even inherent contradictions in the Young Earth view. In addition to clearly interpreting biblical texts, he shows how “Creation Science” is a misnomer. This volume is well worth your time, especially if you have any questions about the theology of creation. It is very accessible and written in easy to understand terms.
I just completed this book. It is a very detailed and well documented absolute extirpation and evisceration of Young Earth Creationism theology, arguments and beliefs. If you can read this book and come away saying that AIG/Ken Ham/ICR and the like represent orthodox Christian theology, I will be very suspicious of just how open minded you are. I do not go around accusing people of heresy or questioning their religion, But the Young Earth Reform Movement (not to be confused with classical Christians who believed in a young earth) are clearly heretical and in total contradiction with even the most basic tenet of the Christian faith.

This book is a gem. The reader will come to appreciate the way God has chosen to reveal himself to mankind, and how to see this in the different prose found in scripture. This book is deeply researched, yet presented in logic you will appreciate. Whether you are a young-earth, old-earth, or a “who-cares-how-old-rocks-are” believer, Gene will open your eyes to see the issues and the theology. In the years to come, you will be pulling this book off your shelf and re-reading favorite chapters to deepen your enlightenment of what God is truly saying to humanity.

The Six Day War in Creationism is a wonderful resource that covers a vast amount of ground critiquing the Young Earth Reform Movement. The author carefully explores various aspects providing personal perspective and significant details that yield new discoveries on the topic. This work is a very digestible resource, and the reader will gain a better grasp of the issues involved. Gene offers a tremendous amount of information and insights that aid the reader in gaining a new appreciation for this area of Christian apologetics. A very helpful index is included at the end to guide the serious student. Gene is to be commended for his dedication and personal research.
